The library and the archives belong to the Information and Documentation Department of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska. Records Department was formed at the same time the Art Gallery was founded, that is, in 1971, and it treasures comprehensive documentation that is related to contemporary art in this region. Significant part of this documentation belongs to the documentation of the Art Gallery, the Gallery of Fine Arts of the Republic of Srpska, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska,  artists and artistic developments in the Republic of Srpska from the second half of the 20th century up to present day, documenation of the Autumn Salons, as well as the documentation which concerns the Banja Luka art scene from 1971 to present day.

The Museum possesses a large hemerotheque, which is divided into entries by subject on one side, and artist portfolios on the other. Besides the information which is related to exhibitions, lectures, articles written by art critics, and other data related to various institutions, the archive also consists of bibliographical units that are related to visual artists who live, or have lived in the Republic of Srpska.

As part of the Records Department, there is also a specialized library for internal use which counts more than 6000 units and which holds books, catalogues and other literature that is related to modern and contemporary art. The Museum library has a special section which treasures more than 630 books that were donated by the Goethe Institute in Sarajevo. These books are related to the art of China, Japan, India and Africa. The library also has in its possession 325 books and catalogues that were donated by the artist Radovan Kragulj, as well as 288 books and catalogues that were donated by Fuad Balić.

The library primarily meets the needs of the Museum employees in their research work, but everybody who is interested in research work which is related to contemporary art has access to the information.
