Between April 15 and 25, the “Space” Art Platform ran a project titled “She-Shed” in association with the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska. The project featured a series of events accompanying the exhibition “Perceptions: The Beauty of a Flower is in the Picking”, hosted by MSURS in collaboration with the British Council.

The goal of “She-Shed” was to bring together female artists, women working in creative industries and today’s young women leaders at one place, which on this occasion was metaphorically shown as the private space of a woman’s room set at MSURS. Everything begins in a woman’s room; it is the place where we spend most of our time, and which we always go back to. It is a place of intimacy, albeit presented differently in this project – its door did not stay closed in front of strangers, which allowed it to raise sociological and cultural questions: what do the project participants do, what kinds of lives do they live, what are the things they think about? What have they accomplished, and where are they on the cultural map? Most importantly, how do they manage to present their work, despite obstacles and adversity?

The project was an opportunity for each of the participants to show her work, and also take part in panels and speak on the topics of the position of women, their lives, actions and identities (stereotypes of women, sexuality, freedom and feelings), especially with reference to the exhibition ‘Perceptions: The Beauty of a Flower is in the Picking’, and cultural differences between Great Britain and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Four panels were held as part of the “She-Shed” project (women in visual arts, women in the film industry, women in the media, and women in literature), along with events staged on the project opening and closing nights. Depending on the panel topic, each event bore a different name, given by artist Sandra Dukić, for which she used authentic proverbs with a comical touch.

The “She-Shed” project was run as part of the “Spring in Banja Luka” festival.
