As one of the activities accompanying the exhibition Highlights: The Collection of Foreign Art of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska, organised to mark the European Year of Cultural Heritage and staged with the assistance of the EU Delegation to BiH, the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska asked the junior and senior students of the Academy of Arts in Banja Luka taking the course Intermedia Art to have their works shown in the 17th annual student exhibition enter into dialogue with the works shown at the MSURS.
With the course requiring that students explore and experiment with new forms of presentation and production in the area of contemporary art, this was an opportunity for the students to make critical comments on the cultural heritage on display, together with the MSURS curators, as well as offer and engage in a new form of artistic dialogue.
In keeping with the theme of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, “Our heritage: where the past meets the future”, 18 students (Aleksandar Bajunović, Dragana Babić, Glorija Tubak, Milica Vujčić, Dragoslav Malinić, Marina Božić, Aleksandra Kuzmanović, Milena Ivić, Svetozar Rodić, Nataša Šešić, Dijana Todić, Sanja Trkulja, Kristina Klincov, Ivana Blagojević, Ivana Komlenić, Jovana Bajić, Milena Pisar, Ivana Jovčić) used their videos, photographs, installations, drawings, performances, and paintings to establish communication with the works by distinguished European artists shown in Highlights. The MSURS sees this exhibition as an opportunity for students especially to not only learn about the collection, but also to intervene in the exhibition, make critical comments on the exhibits, and gain the invaluable experience of creating this kind of show.
The exhibition We, Highlights makes the museum an experimental and creative lab, in which works by artists from the MSURS collection of foreign art are being re-evaluated. It also seeks to recognise the potential in the works of these students, for whom this is an opportunity to start going through the process of on-the-scene artistic and cultural evaluation.
