The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska celebrated the European Night of Museums for the tenth consecutive time, this year with the financial support of m:tel, under the slogan "m:tel – A Friend of Museums".

The theme of this year’s International Museum Day, "Museums for a sustainable society", underscores the active role of museums as advocates of a new model of tolerant and sustainable society, as disseminators of ideas and activities that promote human rights, social and economic justice, and the culture of peace on planet Earth. Since UNESCO declared 2015 the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies, the French directorate of the European Night of Museums proposed that museums touch upon this theme in their activities/programmes. The Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska used "light" as inspiration for the title of its central event that night.

Since 2015 marked the tenth anniversary of the event, MSURS prepared an ambitious, varied programme of activities, which commenced on 30 April 2015 with the opening of the exhibition "Subdued Existence: The Contemporary Serbian Art Scene".

"Light Laboratory", the central visual event of the Night of Museums, was a digital projection mapping project that took place on the front façade of the Museum. This was the first time in ten years that the Museum did not only hold an exhibition, but it also showed impressive video material on the façade of its edifice, putting an accent on the latest multimedia creations of present-day art.

The projection mapping project was the outcome of the call for bids released in March 2015 by MSURS to visual artists, character designers, 3D modellers, animators, cartoonists and illustrators to send proposals for a video mapping project, with the aim to support the development of design and animation in the Republic of Srpska. The selected solutions were joined together, animated and connected to works selected from the MSURS collection in order to be put in a common context.

The video production and postproduction were done by MSURS in cooperation with AEON Production, a company headed by Mladen Đukić, assistant professor of animation at the Academy of Arts in Banja Luka.

The lineup of the music part of the programme staged in front of MSURS included the Banja Luka band SOPOT and DJ Milan Mika Aćimović, alias Кawiar Мangueira. The concert of the band SOPOT took the form of a visual and music performance. SOPOT enjoys the reputation of an alternative band with a visually recognisable identity, which inspired the artists/technicians behind the projection mapping project to connect its music with their video material. What the audience experienced that night was enhanced with the use of motifs from the band videos and by designing new material to accompany the songs played by the band, in combination with abstract elements and characters from the "Light Laboratory".

Another thing that made this year’s Night of Museums special was the pro-active participation of Play Team Production, a team of young and talented directors, cameramen and producers from the Banja Luka Academy of Arts, who directed and filmed a video for SOPOT that night, along with a promotional film about the Night of Museums and the projection mapping event.
