Museum of Contemporary Art
of Republic of Srpska

The exhibition "Interspace" was organised by the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska in 2007, and it was the first joint presentation, intended to be shown primarily outside Bosnia and Herzegovina, of the new contemporary art scene of the Republic of Srpska.

The exhibition was held at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Vojvodina in Novi Sad (22 November – 1 December 2007), the Cultural Centre of Belgrade (21 May – 3 June 2008), the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska in Banja Luka (18 September – 12 October 2008), the Museum of the City of Skopje, as part of the White Night Festival (26 September – 14 October 2009), and the Art Gallery of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo (7–28 February 2010). The idea to organise "Interspace" was born out of the need of both RS artists and the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska to connect with, be recognised by and find a place in the wider region. MSURS, only recently renamed at the time, was the key point of support for the growth of contemporary art in the Republic of Srpska and sought to devise ways to help the development of new artistic practices and the setting of a new framework needed for their growth and survival.

The Banja Luka art scene, comprising the artists presented in this exhibition, primarily gathers young artists, whose visibility has increased in the last few years. Their turn toward alternative sources of information, and also toward alternative forms of action, has led to the formation of the core of this community of artists. They have become visible in the past few years owing to the work of several art associations, but also some quite daring, radical and artistically mature solo projects.
