The exhibition “Fifty Years of the Banja Luka Autumn Salon” was organised to mark the 50th anniversary since the launch of this momentous biennial Yugoslav festival of fine arts.

During the thirty years of its staging, the Banja Luka Autumn Salon, initially a regional art festival, gradually grew to become a major Yugoslav event, once even an international exhibition. Bаnjа Lukа was one of the rare cities in the former Yugoslavia that were receptive and acknowledging of all positive ideas and tendencies in the field of visual arts.

The fourteen Autumn Salons held in the period 1962 to 1989 (the 15th Autumn Salon was prepared in 1992 but was eventually postponed because of the civil war) brought with them the kind of artistic pluralism that brought to the surface the artists’ urge and need to transcend the local and build artistic identity by experimenting with Lyrical Abstraction and geometric abstract painting, expressionist tendencies, surreal themes, Optical Art, hyperrealism and photography, Conceptualism, the broadened field of the New Painting, and many other post-modern art universes.

The exhibition included a selection of the artworks awarded and accessioned by the Autumn Salon and kept in the depot of the Museum of Contemporary Art of the Republic of Srpska. It showed more than 150 paintings, prints, drawings, sculptures and items by Yugoslav and foreign artists (Pierre Alechinsky, Zao Wou Ki, Shoichi Hasegawa, Stanley William Hayter, Jean Messagier, Achille Perilli, Luc Peire, Ivаn Tаbаković, Boško Kаrаnović, Vlаdimir Veličković, Petаr Omčikus, Kosа Bokšаn, Kostа Angeli Rаdovаni, Ljubo Ivаnčić, Oton Glihа, Riko Debenjаk, Hаlil Tikvešа, Velizаr Krstić, Emir Drаgulj, Rаdovаn Krаgulj, Ismаr Mujezinović, Gustаv Gnаmuš, Boris Jesih, Adrijаnа Mаrаž, Slаvko Tihec, Drаgаn Mojović, Aleksаndаr Cvetković, Mlаden Stilinović, IRWIN, Mrđаn Bаjić, and others), who influenced developments in art in the second half of the 20th century.
