The exhibition “Milаn Konjović’s Initiatives at the Crossroads of 20^th-century Serbian Art” is a cross-section of Konjović’s oeuvre and illustrates his cubist, social realist, abstract, expressionist and modern stages.

It attempts to recognise and show the distinct stylistic phenomena and stages of Konjović’s work, which earned him the reputation, in quite a special way, of a peculiar art figure that played a decisive role in the development of 20^th-century Serbian art.

“Milаn Konjović had a long life, and his painting coincided with practically eighty years of Serbian and Yugoslav art, extending through nine decades of the 20^th century. Konjović was one of our greatest expressionist painters. The nature of his expression is possibly most accurately depicted by Protić’s view on expressionists as those who ‘succeeded in sending messages with substance, without disrupting the pictorial particularity and irreducibility of the painting, and managing to reconcile its mission with its essence’. The issue of Konjović’s modernity is a complex one. He was never one of those radically concerned, from a conceptual perspective, with the ontological aspects of painting, nor did he intentionally, systematically or conceptually engage in the analytical questioning or re-examination of painting. Yet, very few of our artists have contributed to the dignity and authenticity of the painting-being and the autonomy of painting grounded on the primary features and values of visual/painting elements as much as he has.
