The exhibition "Music from an Unknown Source" includes 40 gouaches by Sigmar Polke and is a kind of recapitulation of the rich oeuvre of this artist/photographer, one of Germany’s greatest postwar artists.

The theme of these gouaches, made in 1996, is paint dripping, which most convincingly conveys the nature of the gouache painting technique. Sigmar Polke (1941–2010) fought against the unpredictable dripping of paint in his works by using a fixed, predictable model or pattern. The names of his gouaches are next to absurd; their sonority also enhances and enriches the painted, making it more poetic.

Sigmar Polke co-founded the art movement of Capitalist Realism with Gerhard Richter and Konrad Lueg, in response to America’s enchantment with capitalism and consumerism. It was unique art which intricately depicted the complexity of contemporary life in Germany. During his career as an artist, Polke experimented with many styles, themes and materials; the last two decades of his life he focused on historical events and how they were perceived in the present day. He won many awards, including the Golden Lion for best artist/painting at the Venice Biennale in 1986.
