The exhibition "Subdued Existence" seeks to promote and present art practices as used in Serbia in relation to developments in international culture, to which end 15 representative contemporary artists/art groups from Serbia will be presented.

The exhibition was specially designed in 2014 to be shown at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts. It focuses on artworks which are the result of contemporary art practices and exploit extended media to investigate aspects of their social surroundings, possible relations of art and the international position of the Serbian regional scene.

The theme of the exhibition is closely related to Serbia’s history, politics and society. Despite the fact all the selected artists speak a recognisable international language and use all the available modern technological and scientific means, their works still exhibit markers of the region they originated in, through the themes they address, the work process employed in their making and the spirit they emanate. Speaking the language of modern-day media, they explore a variety of contexts in their social surroundings, especially themes concerned with how they personally relate to social and political transition, migration, exile, globalisation, identity issues and present-day economy, capital and technology.
